New Plymouth Visitor Centre - Puke Ariki

18/04/2011

Puke Ariki sets out to inspire creativity by creating stunning exhibitions that highlight Taranaki's past, present and future. A combined museum, library and information centre. Taranaki is a region steeped in history and Puke Ariki (Hill of Chiefs) stands on an original pa site of the great Maori Chief, Te Rangi Apiti Rua around 1700. The pa was deserted and approximately 100 years later it became the landing place for colonial settlers. Puke Ariki is located opposite Len Lye's Wind Wand in central New Plymouth. There are a number of galleries featuring contemporary exhibitions, Taranaki past life, Taranaki geology, flora and fauna, Maori collections (Taonga) and theatre featuring short films on Taranaki life. Puke Ariki: a must see for your Taranaki experience.

Venture Taranaki

18/04/2011

Taranaki offers a region like no other. Bordered by dramatic native bush to the east and the dynamic Tasman Sea to the west, the province wraps itself around the perfect peak of Mt Taranaki. Taranaki has a rich history of both war and peace, and the scars of its past are visible in the ancient Maori Pa as you drive around Surf Highway 45, or in the pioneering efforts of the settlers as you explore New Zealand's first official touring route, the Forgotten World Highway. The best places to brush up on this history are the region's many amazing museums, from Nigel Ogle's Tawhiti Museum in South Taranaki to New Plymouth's Puke Ariki, or one of the many other private and public museums in between. You will find Taranaki a vibrant province, with cutting-edge contemporary art and a bustling local arts scene, a range of sporting and cultural events that are the envy of the rest of the country, and a vibrant cafe scene with seriously good coffee, great wine, and delicious home baking. Beyond the urban areas Taranaki boasts some of the world's best surf breaks, a seemingly endless network of walks on the picture-perfect cone of Mt Taranaki, and beautiful rivers, lakes, beaches and gardens of international significance to explore. Whatever your reasons for visiting, Taranaki will win your heart, offering you an experience that is truly 'like no other'.
